Good/Bad Website Smackdown: Yahoo vs. Spotify

The bad website design I have chosen for this smackdown is the website of Yahoo.com. When first entering Yahoo, you see far too much for an introductory tab. Too much information for one page! With this, I am blinded by the brightness of the screen! This design could be fixed through implementing specific tabs for fields of news, such as sports, politics, or science tabs. This would allow people to see what they are actually looking for instead of scrolling endlessly through the cluttered Yahoo main page. Along with this, making the main page far less bright will always be a beneficial thing for any website. Overall, Yahoo.com is a commonly used website and - while being a news and informative website - this level of clutter should not have been overlooked for so long.

The good website design I have chosen for this smackdown is the website of Spotify.com. When entering the Spotify website, the colors and brightness do not immediately make me shut my eyes if I am in a dark room. Spotify is made for ease of access, and it shows with the design. Adding onto the ease of access, the page you first enter from is not cluttered, everything leads to specific tabs and other parts of the website. I do not have to scroll endlessly here to find what I am looking for, as I can also create playlists of my favorite songs so I do not have to go searching! Overall, Spotify.com is a commonly used website - like Yahoo.com - but does not suffer from the same clutter and brightness that websites such as Yahoo have.

In conclusion, website design has a strong element of simplicity to it. People need to know how to access and use the website for it to be good. When you throw so much information at someone's face right from the main page, they get overwhelmed and are likely to search elsewhere. Spotify does not suffer from this as they link their users where they want to go, only showing limited recommendations from the front page. Websites should be made for easy and calm access, where my eyes don't close shut upon entry, and my mind doesn't go into overdrive searching for what I need.

  1. I absolutely agree that Yahoo has a blinding interface with way too much information. It is hard to navigate and it shows you a cluster of information instead of providing enough navigation tabs for categories of information that someone might be interested in. I also really enjoy the layout and color choice of Spotify. Not to mention, its ease of use and simplicity. It is very important for someone to not lose interest when they see too much information, and to maintain their viewers attention.

  3. I do like the color choices for Spotify, very similar to a dark mode feature for other apps. I also agree that Yahoo is a cluttered website with to much information at once. I liked how you mentioned that websites should be easy on the eyes and mind, when looking at Spotify both of these criteria are met. For me personally the dark modes for any website or apps that are designed with darker colors helps out a lot on the eyes and mind. I also like the idea of simple home page in a website design with an advanced search algorithm that can take you to what you need or answer any questions.
